As a nurse in South Carolina, the care you provide is essential to your patients’ health and recovery. However, even experienced nurses can face unexpected claims of malpractice or negligence. These lawsuits are often expensive, involving attorney fees, court costs, and potential settlements. This can sometimes happen even if  the claims are groundless.

Malpractice insurance offers vital support when a patient files a claim. It also demonstrates to employers and clients that you are a responsible professional who takes risk management seriously.

What Types of Insurance do Nurses need in South Carolina?

South Carolina does not require nurses to carry malpractice insurance to maintain their license. However, many nurses—especially those who are self-employed or work independently—choose to purchase coverage to shield themselves from costly lawsuits and liability risks. Many employers may also require it as part of their hiring conditions.

Insurance can act as a safety net, helping you stay focused on delivering great care without worrying about financial consequences.

Protects you from legal claims of negligence, mistakes, or omissions in your care. This insurance can help cover your legal defense, settlements, and court costs if a patient alleges that your treatment caused harm.

Covers third-party injury and property damage claims that may happen in your workplace. Ideal for nurses who lease office space, provide mobile services, or participate in community events and clinics.

A Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) is a convenient package of insurance that protects your business against the common risks it faces every day. The BOP product includes various coverages that may suit the unique requirements of your small business.

In South Carolina, Workers’ Compensation is required for most employers with four or more employees. It helps cover lost wages and medical expenses if a staff member is injured while working.

All states have different laws when it comes to Workers’ Compensation insurance, so it’s best to always confirm what your legal obligations are if you are an employer.

How Much Does Nurse Insurance Cost in South Carolina?

There is no single product known as ‘nurse insurance’ in South Carolina. Instead, nurse insurance refers to the common types of insurance often taken out by healthcare professionals. For example, Professional Liability insurance, which is sometimes also referred to as malpractice insurance.

The cost of nurse insurance in South Carolina varies depending on factors such as your role, and whether you’re employed or self-employed. Location can also impact the cost. A nurse working in Charleston or Columbia may pay more than a nurse based in Goose Creek or Greer. From Myrtle Beach to Greenville, BizInsure can help you find coverage to suit your needs.

FEEDBACK: In my personal opinion, your telephone customer service needs to be improved. Whomever basically and initially answers the phone calls lately needs a new headset, honestly. I know you record all of your calls; however, listening skills truly needs to be improved also, IMO and if I ask someone to please take a message, and they tell me they are going to do so, then follow through and send that message to the main person I'm trying to reach. I have had difficulty getting back to the "exact" insurance agent with whom I've been working with and it's been a bit frustrating handling this current 2025-2026 renewal.
BizInsure has always been a necessary and important business resource.
