9 Strategies to Success as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner

Published: Jul 14, 2025 · 6 minutes to read

Graduating from a physician assistant or nurse practitioner program is a significant achievement. You’re ready to take on your new role after years of intensive study, clinical rotations and exams.

success as a nurse practitioner

Nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants both offer advanced healthcare to their patients, diagnosing illnesses, prescribing medications, and overseeing care management. Both professions are experiencing significant job growth – employment for NPs is projected to rise 40% between 2023-2033 while PA employment will experience 28% expansion during that same period.

These careers can be rewarding and provide significant opportunities, yet success requires more than merely earning a diploma. Continuous learning, understanding your scope of practice, and finding mentorship support all help to guarantee a fulfilling career experience.

Here are nine strategies that will help ensure your success as a new NP or PA.

1. Prepare thoroughly for the Board Exam

Nurse practitioners who wish to practice independently must first pass the National Board Certification Exam. The AANP and ANCC offer this exam. Physician assistants are required to pass the Physician Assisting National Certifying Examination.

Set up a study plan early and use practice tests to measure your progress; and if necessary, join study groups, online forums and review courses to help you if necessary.

2. How to Land Your First Job in a Strategic Way

It can be overwhelming to get your first job as a PA or NP, but this is the beginning of your career.

Your resume should highlight your clinical rotations, any specialization experience and other relevant skills.

If you work in a high-acuity environment, consider roles that provide mentorship or onboarding support.

Your first job might not be the ideal role for you, but it will provide you with valuable real-world work experience.

You can find opportunities by using job boards that are tailored for advanced practitioners and leveraging school resources or alumni contacts.

3. Commit yourself to lifelong learning

In healthcare, graduation is just the beginning. Treatments, guidelines, and technologies are constantly evolving.

Continue to maintain certification by obtaining continuing education credits.

Attend webinars and subscribe to clinical journals. Stay informed of new treatment protocols.

To stay sharp while on the go, choose a few medical apps and resources that you trust.

Continued education not only improves your skills but also enhances your confidence and competence.

4. Understand the scope of your practice

The roles of NPs and PAs are regulated differently in each state. In some states, nurse practitioners can practice independently without physician supervision, while in others, they must be supervised by a physician or have a collaborative agreement.

PAs are typically under the supervision of a physician. However, their autonomy can vary from state to state. Understanding your range of practice will ensure you are operating within legal and professional boundaries. If you plan to work in New Hampshire or Tennessee, familiarize yourself with their laws and consider coverage options like insurance for nurses in New Hampshire or insurance for nurses in Tennessee to protect your career.

5. Find a mentor in the field

Mentors can offer valuable career advice, help navigate challenging clinical situations, and provide support when you feel overwhelmed.

Find someone who specializes in your field or is more experienced in your office.

Be open to constructive criticism and ask thoughtful questions.

Mentorship can help you identify your areas of growth and develop your professional identity.

Take advantage of formal mentoring programs offered by many professional organizations early on in your career.

6. Create a strong professional network

In healthcare, you can grow both personally and professionally by building relationships with others.

Join professional organizations like the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or the American Academy of PAs. The networking process can provide job opportunities, new resources for learning, and referrals. You can also meet professionals in related fields, such as those offering general liability insurance, to ensure you’re aware of resources that protect you as you expand your professional reach.

7. Be open to feedback and learn from mistakes

Not everyone is perfect, especially in the early stages of practice. You can improve by listening to feedback from patients, peers, and supervisors.

Consider each feedback as an opportunity to improve. You should own up to your mistakes, learn from them, and then move on. If it helps, consider keeping a journal of reflections to keep track of challenges and new insights.

Your openness to new learning will help you stand out and accelerate your career.

8. Develop effective communication skills

Clear, empathetic communication is essential, whether you are talking to patients, their families, or working with colleagues.

Avoid medical jargon and practice active listening when speaking to patients.

When communicating in a busy clinic environment, be concise and assertive in your approach.

Do not forget to document accurately and clearly. This will protect both you and your patient.

Strong communication improves patient outcomes, builds trust and reduces misunderstandings.

9. Protect yourself with Nurse Malpractice Insurance

Insurance for nurses is one of the best moves you can take early in your career, whether you are an NP or PA. Otherwise known as Professional Liability Insurance, this type of insurance protects you against claims of negligence, misrepresentation or mistake, as well as document or paperwork errors.

Your employer may provide some insurance, but it is often tailored to their needs rather than yours.

By having your own insurance policy, you are giving yourself peace of mind if there is a claim or a legal issue relating to the care you provide.

Your career starts now

Becoming a physician assistant or nurse practitioner is about developing a career that balances compassion, knowledge, and responsibility. The learning process continues after graduation. This is also the time to create a successful and meaningful career—supported by the right protections from BizInsure every step of the way.

I looked around a lot for E&O insurance for my publishing business before landing on BizInsure. While I won't mention names here, let's just say that I looked at some "big" ones that didn't (or maybe couldn't) beat what I found here. It's also an easy and seamless application process. No surprises or fuzzy language. I'm very impressed...
BizInsure LLC is a good insurance; I really like the service and coverage.
Great insurance serviceing and customer service EXCEPT the web page does not show purchases. A one stop location for policies, addenda, etc AND past/current purchases is helpful instead of hunting for email receipts.

Easy to work with and very responsive. Glad to have them as my broker.
