What Types of Insurance do Nurses need in Maryland?

Whether you’re a nurse practitioner, RN, or CNA, there are several types of insurance that can help protect your professional reputation and financial future.

While there is no legally mandated nurse insurance in Maryland, obtaining insurance can help to protect your finances, career and reputation if the worst case scenario does happen. It is also worth noting that, in Maryland, many commercial property owners also require proof of general liability insurance as part of their lease agreements.

There is no one type of insurance known as nurse insurance. Instead, this term is applied to the different kinds of insurance generally considered by nurses and other healthcare professionals. For example, Professional Liability insurance. This kind of insurance helps shield you from financial losses stemming from claims of negligence, errors, or omissions in your practice. Coverage may include:

  • Legal defense costs
  • Settlements and compensation
  • Court fees.

Professional Liability insurance may cover:

  • Negligent or improper treatment – such as failure to inform a patient of medication risks or mistakes in care.
  • Misrepresentation – being accused of giving misleading or incorrect information that causes patient harm.
  • Incorrect advice – giving clinical guidance that results in adverse outcomes.

General liability insurance covers claims of bodily injury and property damage that might occur during your professional activities. It’s often required when signing lease agreements or partnering with facilities.

It can help protect you from:

  • Accidental injuries to clients, patients, or visitors.
  • Property damage caused during treatment.

A Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) is a convenient package of insurance that protects your business against the common risks it faces every day. The BOP product includes various coverages that may suit the unique requirements of your small business. This may be a good idea for Maryland nurses who own or manage their own practice, clinic, or healthcare business.

In Maryland, businesses with one or more employees are legally required to carry Workers’ Compensation insurance, including those in the healthcare sector. This coverage supports employees by covering:

  • Medical expenses from work-related injuries.
  • Partial wage replacement during recovery.

Cyber Liability Insurance

Cyber Insurance

Cyber liability insurance may be considered essential for nurses who handle sensitive patient records. It helps cover the cost of:

  • Data breaches
  • Cyberattacks
  • Identity fraud monitoring
  • Regulatory penalties.

How Much Does Insurance Cost for Nurses in Maryland?

For nurses in Maryland, the cost of insurance premiums will vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Nursing specialty
  • Type of coverage selected
  • Claims history
  • Business size.

Location can also play a significant role in impacting the price of insurance premiums. For example, a nurse working in Baltimore or Towson may pay a higher premium than a nurse working in Germantown or Ellicott City.

FEEDBACK: In my personal opinion, your telephone customer service needs to be improved. Whomever basically and initially answers the phone calls lately needs a new headset, honestly. I know you record all of your calls; however, listening skills truly needs to be improved also, IMO and if I ask someone to please take a message, and they tell me they are going to do so, then follow through and send that message to the main person I'm trying to reach. I have had difficulty getting back to the "exact" insurance agent with whom I've been working with and it's been a bit frustrating handling this current 2025-2026 renewal.
