How to become a management consultant and start a business

Sep 10, 2019 · 4 minutes to read

If you have decided to take up a career in management consultancy, you have made a smart decision. Management consultancy not only comes with attractive pay, but also offers the opportunity to develop your skills in a diverse range of areas and meet people from different business backgrounds. Before you embark on your journey, it helps to have a clear picture of what you will be doing as a management consultant.

What is a management consultant?

A management consultant handles a diverse range of responsibilities, but principally helps a business improve its efficiency. They ensure that all aspects of a business, be it marketing or sales or HR, work in tandem to create a cohesive unit. A consultant identifies the factors that are preventing a businessโ€™ growth and then proposes solutions to address these roadblocks.

How much money does a management consultant make?

On average, management consultants make approximately $90,000 per year. However, depending on your experience, expertise and the industries you work with, you could earn significantly more.

How to become a management consultant?

There is no hard and fast rule that applies to becoming a management consultant. That said, it is recommended you obtain a degree.

Start by getting your bachelorโ€™s degree in business administration, or a specific area that you want to specialize in such as finance or accounting. Other good options to consider are marketing, human resources, and even psychology.

Getting your masterโ€™s from a reputed business management institute adds a lot of value to your resume. Masterโ€™s in Business Administration or MBA programs can be found at almost every major university in the U.S. You can also do your MBA via distance-learning wherein you can complete the course while working full-time or part-time.

While other certifications are not mandatory, it does give you an edge over the competition. The Certified Management Consultant (CMC) is perhaps the best-known certification. To get this, you need to have practiced as a full-time consultant for three years after completing a four-year degree.

It is important for you to upgrade your skills and knowledge often so that you can keep up with new management styles and techniques. Consider undertaking short-term courses, workshops, and training sessions.

Many firms pick up consultants at both graduate and postgraduate levels and offer further training and mentorship within the firm itself.

Skillset โ€“ What Do Firms Look For?

To succeed as a management consultant, you must possess certain traits. Here are a few that are sought-after by consultancy firms:

Client management skills: A clear aptitude for handling clients, understanding their needs, and being able to reassure them.

Teamwork: As a management consultant, you have to work with various people across an organization. It is important to be a good team player.

Adaptability: You have to be able to think on your feet, as the problems you face can be unpredictable. Sometimes you may have to work around the clock to ensure that your client achieves the results they wish to see.

Problem-solving: You must be able to quickly get to the heart of the problem, and figure out the most viable solutions that can be implemented with the least disruption.

Setting up your firm

For many management consultants, the end game is to set up their own firm. However, opening your own business and providing advice to clients comes with risk.

Protect yourself and your business with BizInsure. With Professional Liability insurance for management consultants, you and your business are protected from lawsuits that claim negligence and improper or incomplete services on your part. It will also pay for expenses related to a court case against you, including lawyerโ€™s fees and judgment or settlement fees.
