Architect license requirements in Washington

Jun 17, 2023 · 3 minutes to read

Becoming a licensed architect in Washington involves a process that varies significantly depending on your location. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the steps involved, read on to discover the requirements for getting a Washington State architecture license, empowering you with the knowledge needed to embark on the journey fully informed. Additionally, we’ll provide you with valuable information on architect business insurance, a protective measure that safeguards your business from risks once it is established and operational.

National Council of Architectural Registration Board requirements

To earn a new architect’s license in the majority of states, you will need to meet the following licensing requirements set forth by the National Council of Architectural Registration Board.

1. Get a degree in your field from a program accredited by the appropriate professional association

NCARB requires that you have a degree from an accredited bachelor’s or master’s program. Depending on the state, a degree equivalent or additional experience can be accepted as fulfilling the education requirement.

2. Completion of an approved experience program

NCARB also requires that general architects have experience in the industry through the Architecture Experience Program. This program requires 3,740 hours of work experience under the supervision of a licensed architect.

3. Pass the National Exam for Architecture

NCARB requires that you also pass the Architect Registration Exam for General Architects (ARE). You will be tested in areas such as health, safety, and welfare. The cost is $1.410.

4. Pay for your architect license

According to your state’s laws, you will also be required to pay the applicable fees and submit a request.

Some states require additional classes or exams to address the specific challenges faced by architects working in their state. For example, Alaska requires an Arctic engineering education.

The NCARB Certificate allows you to easily apply for licensure if you are planning to apply in more than one state. It is used to promote standards among the 55 U.S. jurisdictions and so it’s part of the licensing process in many states. You can get licensed in Mexico as well as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Architect License Requirements in Washington

Washington encourages applicants for general architects with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree accredited in architecture to use the Direct Registration Process with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

After meeting all requirements, including an accredited university degree, completion and passing scores of all portions of the Architect Registration Exam (including the Architectural Experience Program), applicants must complete a take-home Architect Law Review that is specific to Washington.

Licenses via reciprocity are also available to those licensed in another state. Architects must maintain their eligibility for renewal by completing 24 hours of continuing education requirements every two years.

I looked around a lot for E&O insurance for my publishing business before landing on BizInsure. While I won't mention names here, let's just say that I looked at some "big" ones that didn't (or maybe couldn't) beat what I found here. It's also an easy and seamless application process. No surprises or fuzzy language. I'm very impressed...
BizInsure LLC is a good insurance; I really like the service and coverage.
Great insurance serviceing and customer service EXCEPT the web page does not show purchases. A one stop location for policies, addenda, etc AND past/current purchases is helpful instead of hunting for email receipts.
