A business consultant will generally do the following:

How to Become a Business Consultant

1. Get certified in your field of interest

Your certifications will show new clients that you know what you are talking about and help build confidence in your abilities. You may wish to consider a bachelor’s degree in law, marketing, HR, business or economics and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA).

2. Select your target market

Depending on your tertiary qualifications and area of expertise, decide which niche your consulting business will target. Specializing will allow you to give the right kind of advice to your clients.

3. Create a financial plan

A financial plan helps you optimally use the capital invested in your business. A standardized pricing scale makes it easy for you to talk to your customers, explain your services and what they should expect when they sign up for a package with you. It also prevents confusion about who should pay you what for services rendered and makes your accounting hassle-free, which is a big convenience at tax time.

4. Get your business insured

Starting your own small business comes with risk. As a consultant giving advice, there is a chance that you may get things wrong. That’s why insurance for consultants is so important to protect your back pocket and your reputation.

5. Start promoting your business

You have to market your business so that business owners know about your existence! Develop a well-defined marketing plan that includes strategies for print and digital media.
