Frequently asked questions
Washington requires most long term care workers who provide home care services to become certified as home care aides, unless an exemption applies. The Washington State Department of Health oversees home care aide certification.
The main requirements include:
submit a home care aide certification application to the Washington State Department of Health
complete 75 hours of basic training through an approved program
complete the required state and federal background checks
pass the home care aide knowledge and skills examinations
obtain certification within the required timeframe
Home care agencies have separate licensing requirements. Agencies must submit an application, complete the required orientation, provide proof of commercial general liability insurance, complete background checks for required personnel, and pass the state licensing process.
Washington currently allows eligible home care aides up to 365 days from their date of hire to obtain certification under rules in effect through December 31, 2027. The 75 hour training requirement must still be completed within 120 days of hire.
Requirements can vary based on the type of care and your role. Check the Washington State Department of Health for the latest certification and licensing requirements.
